Day in the Work Life: Bike mechanic
There are 600,000 bikes in Amsterdam and they're fairly robust, but occasionally, you're gonna need something tweaked. That means a visit to Wim.
Wim fixes up one of Amsterdam's 600,000 bikes. Like most Dutch bikes, it's built like a tank. "A bicycle here is your basic way of transport," explains Wim. "It needs to be as robust as possible. And everything that you add on it -- like on sports bikes you have cables and hand brakes and gears -- that'll all be broken within days. A typical Dutch bicycle looks really crappy. But they ride perfect, and there's nothing on it that you don't need." (Rico Gagliano)
